Anker Announces Global Recall of Power Banks Due to Fire Risk

Following a voluntary recall of the Anker PowerCore 10000, the company has initiated a broader global recall affecting five additional power bank models.

Anker states that this action is a precautionary measure stemming from recent enhancements to its internal quality assurance protocols. While the company maintains that the chances of malfunction are minimal, the affected models are being recalled “out of an abundance of caution.” All five models in the recall utilize lithium-ion battery cells from the same supplier.

Affected Models

This global recall (via MacRumors) includes the following power banks:

  • Anker Power Bank (10K, 22.5W) — Model A1257
  • Anker Power Bank (20,000mAh, 22.5W, Built-In USB-C Cable) — Model A1647
  • Anker MagGo Power Bank (10,000mAh, 7.5W) — Model A1652
  • Anker Zolo Power Bank (20K, 30W, Built-In USB-C and Lightning Cable) — Model A1681
  • Anker Zolo Power Bank (20K, 30W, Built-In USB-C Cable) — Model A1689

To locate the model and serial number of your device, Anker advises that “the serial number is typically found on the side or back of the product.”

If you own any of these models, Anker advises you to cease using them immediately, regardless of whether they seem to function normally. The company warns that the batteries in question could overheat, potentially resulting in melting, smoke, or even fire.

How to Determine if Your Device is Affected

Follow these steps provided by Anker:

Step 1: Locate your model number on the back or side of your power bank. If it matches one of the following (A1257, A1647, A1652, A1681, A1689), proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: Confirm your serial number or submit proof of purchase using our online recall form: http://www.anker.com/rc2506-form

Note: Pay careful attention to characters in your serial number, such as “1,” “L,” “l,” “2,” and “Z.” Letters like “0” (zero) and “O” (the letter O) can be easily confused. Affected serial numbers will not include the letters “O” or “I.”

Instructions for Replacement and Disposal

As with the recall of the PowerCore 10000, Anker requests that customers refrain from disposing of the power bank until the company confirms its eligibility for replacement.

The company stresses that recalled lithium-ion batteries should be taken to a certified facility, typically a municipal Household Hazardous Waste collection site, rather than recycling or drop-off boxes, as these are not equipped to safely handle recalled batteries.
