Apple Celebrates New Achievement in Its Journey to Achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2030

In anticipation of Earth Day next week, Apple has released an update regarding its “Apple 2030” initiative aimed at achieving carbon neutrality across its entire operations. The company reveals that it has now achieved over a “60 percent reduction in its global greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2015 levels.”

Lisa Jackson, Apple’s Vice President of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, highlighted this achievement in a statement today but emphasized that the journey is becoming increasingly challenging as the 2030 target approaches:

“We are extremely proud of the strides we are making towards Apple 2030, affecting every aspect of our business. Currently, we are utilizing more renewable energy and recycled materials in our product manufacturing than ever before, conserving water, reducing waste globally, and making substantial investments in nature. As we near 2030, the challenges grow — and we are rising to the occasion with innovation, teamwork, and a sense of urgency.”

As part of the Apple 2030 plan, the focus is on cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 75% from the benchmark year of 2015, followed by “utilizing high-quality carbon credits to offset the remaining emissions.”

Here are more statistics from Apple today:

  • Apple’s global supply chain now boasts 17.8 gigawatts of renewable electricity.
  • The renewable energy sourced by Apple suppliers prevented 21.8 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2024, marking an increase of over 17 percent from the previous year.
  • By collaborating with Apple to enhance their energy efficiency, suppliers avoided nearly 2 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions last year.
  • Suppliers involved in Apple’s Zero Waste program diverted around 600,000 metric tons of waste from landfills in 2024.
  • Since launching the Supplier Clean Water Program in 2013, Apple and its suppliers have conserved over 90 billion gallons of fresh water.

Alongside a press release shared today, Apple has also released its annual Environmental Progress Report. This report provides a comprehensive overview of Apple’s continuing environmental objectives as the company aims for carbon neutrality within the next five years.
