Apple Enhances Base iPad with A16 Chip and Double the Storage Capacity

In addition to the new iPad Air, Apple has also updated the standard iPad model today. The iPad is now equipped with an A16 chip and offers double the storage for the same price of $349.

This upgrade means that Apple’s most affordable iPad now comes with a starting storage capacity of 128 GB, along with options for 256 GB and a brand-new 512 GB variant. With enhanced processing power and doubled storage capacity, the new iPad offers even greater value compared to the previous 10th generation model.

When compared to the A14 chip found in the earlier generation iPad (10th-generation), the A16 chip in this new model provides speeds that are up to 30 percent faster.

As an added incentive, Apple claims that this budget-friendly iPad outperforms the leading Android tablet by as much as six times.

Nonetheless, it’s important to note that the A16 chip does not possess sufficient power to support Apple Intelligence. Consequently, this entry-level iPad will not have access to the premium A.I. features available in this tablet generation.

The iPad still supports the Apple Pencil (USB-C) for drawing and stylus usage, as well as the same Magic Keyboard Folio accessory to facilitate typing.

The starting price for the new iPad is $349, with cellular models beginning at $499. For educational purchasers, the iPad is available at a reduced price of $329, or $479 for the cellular version.

Customers can pre-order the new iPad today at the Apple Online Store, with the first units expected to ship next week on March 12.

(The official designation of the product is ‘iPad (A16)’, consistent with Apple’s recent trend of naming its tablets based on the chip that powers them.)

Additionally, Apple introduced a new iPad Air featuring the M3 chip along with an updated Magic Keyboard. A refresh of the MacBook Air is also anticipated to be announced shortly.
