Apple TV App Introduces Customizable Tab Bar in iPadOS 18.2 Beta

Today, Apple rolled out iPadOS 18.2 beta 3, bringing an exciting new feature for users of the TV app. The Apple TV app now includes a customizable tab bar, marking a gradual expansion of this feature to more applications.

Enhanced iPad tab bars are gradually expanding

The number of features added in iPadOS 18 and its updates is impressive. However, during the initial announcement at WWDC this June, Apple revealed very limited details regarding the release.

This is largely due to the fact that while iPad users are receiving significant enhancements like Apple Intelligence, new customization options, and upgrades to existing system apps, there’s not a whole lot that’s exclusive to the iPad.

One of the few unique additions for the iPad this year is a redesigned tab bar for apps.

Fortunately, this feature is more thrilling than it initially appears.

Applications can now implement a floating tab bar at the top of the interface, mimicking the layout seen in select tvOS applications.

Although many Apple apps have adopted the new floating design, only a handful have taken full advantage of the most significant benefit of the system: user customization.

In supported apps, users can tailor the tab bar with the menu options that matter most to them.

For instance, in the Music app, I’ve added my favorite playlists directly to my tab bar.

Now, with the iPadOS 18.2 beta, Apple has finally introduced customization options for the TV app.

To edit the TV app’s tab bar in the latest beta, simply long-press to enter edit mode.

Apple allows users to add any sidebar option to the tab bar, including:

  • Channels & Apps, such as Disney+, Max, and Peacock
  • Library sections like Recent Purchases, Movies, and more
  • and the Sports tab

Once an item is added to the tab bar, accessing it will be much simpler going forward.

However, it’s worth noting that Apple currently does not permit the removal of default tab options. For instance, if you’re not interested in soccer, the MLS tab will still occupy space in your tab bar.

It’s refreshing to see more system applications supporting tab bar customization, and one can only hope that third-party apps will embrace this feature as well. Apple first showcased a customizable TV tab bar back in June, so the implementation has taken some time, and it would be unreasonable to expect third-party developers to move any quicker than Apple.

iPadOS 18.2 is anticipated to be released to the public in early to mid-December, meaning those not using the beta will soon access these new features in just a few weeks.
