Managing Macs, iPads, and iPhones on a large scale continues to improve, thanks to Apple’s ongoing efforts to address challenges each year. However, some tasks remain tedious. For me, creating configuration profiles is one of those time-consuming tasks that I find tedious, especially when it comes to macOS app permissions and privacy settings. That’s where iMazing’s Profile Editor has become an indispensable tool for IT administrators. With version 2, it has become even more beneficial for Apple IT specialists.
About Apple @ Work: Bradley Chambers managed an enterprise IT network from 2009 to 2021. His experience includes deploying and overseeing firewalls, switches, mobile device management systems, enterprise-grade Wi-Fi, and thousands of Macs and iPads. Bradley shares insights on how Apple IT managers deploy devices, build supporting networks, train users, and offer suggestions for how Apple could enhance its products for IT departments.
Total App Setup simplifies privacy preference configuration and beyond
The standout feature in version 2 is called Total App Setup. If you’ve ever had to configure Privacy Preferences Policy Control settings for macOS applications, you know it can often be labor-intensive. Total App Setup reviews an app bundle and automatically creates the necessary payloads for PPPC, notifications, login items, and associated domains. While Apple’s approach aims to enhance security, it does echo some of the challenges faced during Windows Vista.
What once required 10 to 15 minutes per app now takes mere seconds. It accommodates any application you apply it to, and the resulting profile is compatible with any device management solution that supports configuration profiles. From my tests, this feature will significantly reduce time for IT admins ensuring that security tools or productivity apps function without user prompts.
Additional new functionalities
The iMazing Profile Editor 2 also accommodates visionOS configuration profiles, which may not be primarily relevant to most organizations at this stage, but it shows that the team is planning ahead. Tools like this will be ready when visionOS becomes part of IT deployment discussions. Apple Vision Pro has already presented some intriguing use cases for deploying UniFi access points. While I’m not fully convinced about AVP today, I am keeping a close watch for essential enterprise applications.
Version 2 of the application now supports MCX-style payloads. It also allows the importation of payloads from existing plist files or profiles and enables exporting them into scripts for automation purposes. While these may not be major highlights, they are enhancements that augment the app’s capabilities for specific situations.
Conclusion
One of the greatest features of the iMazing Profile Editor remains its accessibility—making it user-friendly for almost anyone, regardless of prior experience with Apple IT. There’s no registration, payment tier, or tie-in to a larger ecosystem. It operates locally and is equally effective whether you’re managing ten Macs or ten thousand. This makes it an outstanding tool for IT teams desiring a dependable method to create and modify profiles without unnecessary complications; it integrates seamlessly with your device management platform.
