On January 27, the Twitter account of Azuki, a well-known NFT (nonfungible token) project was breached, allowing hackers to steal more than $750,000 in USD Coin by tweeting a fraudulent “wallet drainer link” that appeared to be a virtual land mint.

In less than 30 minutes after the fraudulent links were posted, hackers illegally moved $751,321.80 in USDC from one single wallet, as per the Etherscan data given to a news outlet by cryptocurrency wallet security company Wallet Guard. According to the data, an additional USDC worth $6,752.62 was stolen by hackers from other wallets that held 11 NFTs and more than 3.9 Ether. According to Wallet Guard, hackers took a total amount of $758,074.42.

The Azuki account was hacked, according to Emily Rose, a community manager looking after the anime-inspired NFT project, who advised followers not to open any links coming from the Twitter Account of Azuki on January 27.

On Jan. 27, Wallet Guard hosted a Twitter Space where the NFT project’s product manager and head of community, Dem, revealed how scammers were capable of publishing a wallet drainer link after taking over Azuki’s Twitter. While the group worked to retake control over the account, Dem advised users to keep safe and be suspicious. Azuki tweeted a few hours later to announce that they had reclaimed possession of the Twitter account. Dem and Rose retweeting the announcement served as confirmation of this.

The NFT project stressed to its followers in a tweet that they should always “go out on multiple channels” to confirm the news after regaining control of the account. When in doubt, it advised contacting the Azuki “mod team” via Discord. The Twitter account of the stock trading website Robinhood was hacked on January 25.
