CarPlay’s ‘Next Generation’ Exceeds Our Expectations

The development of CarPlay has been a letdown in several areas since the “next generation” was first showcased in 2022. However, recent changes over just a month have made CarPlay’s future appear more promising than it has been in years—partly due to a new definition of what that future entails.

The next generation of CarPlay transcends just CarPlay Ultra

The anticipated “next generation” of CarPlay felt like it might never materialize.

Yet, it’s finally here—with an unexpected twist. Surprisingly, it may even surpass Apple’s previous expectations.

When Apple first presented the next-gen CarPlay at WWDC three years ago, it showcased an ambitious vision to enhance various aspects of your in-car experience.

Initially, many automotive brands pledged support, but over time, manufacturers have appeared more hesitant to cede their software experience to Apple.

In response, Apple adjusted its strategy, resulting in a dual approach for CarPlay that benefits all users.

CarPlay Ultra launched last month, and my first impression was overwhelmingly positive—not mainly due to any specific features of the first supported vehicle.

Instead, I viewed CarPlay Ultra as a significant development because it clearly did not aim to replace standard CarPlay.

Rather, CarPlay Ultra emerged as a distinct, more premium choice. I was hopeful that some features would eventually be integrated into the standard CarPlay offering.

And within weeks, that integration has already started.

iOS 26 introduces a feature-rich update for all CarPlay users

iOS 26 is packed with enhancements for CarPlay.

There are more upgrades than I can recall since the unveiling of “next-gen CarPlay.”

A major addition is the introduction of widgets, directly adapted from CarPlay Ultra.

Additionally, a new Liquid Glass design, video support, Smart Display Zoom, and other features are included.

This is a significant year for CarPlay.

Apple’s releases of both CarPlay Ultra and the new functionalities in iOS 26 highlight an important takeaway.

The “next generation” of CarPlay isn’t restricted to high-end vehicles. Instead, it aims to benefit all users.

Apple is heavily reinvesting in the standard CarPlay experience both now and for the future, while also simultaneously expanding CarPlay Ultra where feasible.

CarPlay is truly embarking on a new era of transformation, and it is starting strong.
