The rise of ChatGPT continues to reach unprecedented levels, recently achieving the title of the most downloaded app (excluding games) worldwide, as reported by Appfigures. This surge is undoubtedly linked to Studio Ghibli’s influence.
ChatGPT Leads Global App Charts, Partly Due to iOS Performance
The rankings for the most downloaded apps globally tend to be quite predictable.
Typically, TikTok and Instagram alternate between the top two positions.
However, in March, spurred by the release of image generation features and the ensuing Ghibli-style excitement, ChatGPT soared to first place.
According to a recent Appfigures report, the download figures for applications (excluding games) are as follows:
- ChatGPT: 46 million downloads (13 million on iOS, 33 million on Android)
- Instagram: 46 million downloads (5 million on iOS, 41 million on Android)
- TikTok: 45 million downloads (8 million on iOS, 37 million on Android)
Ultimately, ChatGPT’s lead on the iPhone’s App Store charts played a crucial role in securing a close win.
Despite the majority of its downloads coming from Android, the AI application enjoyed significant success on iOS when compared to both TikTok and Instagram.
ChatGPT topped Apple’s App Store, while TikTok was positioned at number six, and Instagram failed to make the top ten.
DMN’s Perspective
It’s interesting to consider the stark difference between the viral impact of ChatGPT’s image features and the comparatively minimal effect of Apple’s Image Playground app.
The ethical dilemmas surrounding AI-generated art merit attention, especially regarding ChatGPT’s exponential growth. Yet, as someone who reports on Apple regularly, I ponder how much regret the company may feel regarding OpenAI’s latest accomplishments.
