Taxpayers can still receive a stimulus payment of up to $1,400, depending on how they filed their 2021 tax returns.
The Internal Revenue Service announced in December a distribution of approximately $2.4 billion, with payments up to $1,400 per individual, for U.S. taxpayers who did not claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns.
According to the IRS, this round of stimulus payments was initiated after the agency analyzed internal data which revealed that many eligible taxpayers who filed a 2021 tax return failed to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit— a refundable credit for those who did not receive one or more Economic Impact Payments, commonly referred to as stimulus payments.
What if a taxpayer didn’t file a 2021 tax return?
The IRS stated that taxpayers who haven’t filed their 2021 tax returns may still be eligible, but they must file by April 15, 2025, to claim the credit and any additional refunds they may be entitled to.
Who is eligible for the latest IRS stimulus check?
As mentioned, taxpayers who haven’t yet filed their 2021 tax returns can also receive the payment provided they file by the deadline and claim the credit. Those who did not claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 returns are also eligible.
Taxpayers can verify if they claimed this credit by reviewing their 2021 tax return and checking if they left the Recovery Rebate Credit field blank or filled it in as $0.
How do taxpayers claim the latest IRS stimulus check?
Taxpayers who filed a 2021 tax return will not need to take any action to receive the latest stimulus payment. The IRS began automatically sending out payments in December.
Eligible taxpayers will receive a letter informing them of the payment, and the funds will either be directly deposited or sent via paper check.
Taxpayers who didn’t file a 2021 tax return may still qualify for the stimulus payment if they file their return and claim the Recovery Rebate Credit by April 15.
How much money will taxpayers receive?
An eligible taxpayer may receive as much as $1,400, according to the IRS.
