Choosing Next Year’s iPhone 17 Will Be More Challenging Than Ever for Users Like Me

Typically, selecting an iPhone model to purchase is uncomplicated for me. I always opt for a Pro version—generally, the smaller variant. However, the upcoming iPhone 17 series, along with the anticipated sleek 17 Air model, is complicating my decision more than ever. Here are the main considerations I’m pondering.

Plus model is out, Air model is in for the iPhone 17 series

Apple keeps pushing the boundaries of its flagship iPhone lineup, especially with changes to its fourth model.

Before, there was the iPhone mini, but it didn’t achieve sufficient sales, prompting Apple to introduce the iPhone Plus. It seems history is repeating itself, as the Plus model has yet to substantiate its place in the lineup.

In the upcoming year, Apple will replace it with the iPhone 17 Air. Notable features include:

  • a remarkably slim design
  • a screen size that falls between the Pro and Pro Max
  • only one rear camera
  • a premium price tag

While on paper the 17 Air might not be the ‘top’ iPhone, it undoubtedly provides a glimpse into the future of the lineup.

Similar to how the iPhone X marked a significant advance in design, but this time it comes with compromises that make it less intriguing.

iPhone 17 Air: Trade-offs for Pro users

Many aspects of the iPhone 17 Air sound promising to me. After a series of iPhone updates that have seen little change in the physical design, a significant form factor shift is thrilling.

I currently own an iPhone 16 Pro and would typically anticipate purchasing a 17 Pro next year.

However, the allure of the 17 Air might alter that plan. There are three essential points making this decision particularly difficult:

  • Missing the 5x telephoto lens: After forgoing the 5x telephoto last year—given the Pro Max is too bulky for me—I’ve been enjoying it on my 16 Pro. While strolling through the city, I can now capture shots I’ve always wanted. Distance is no longer a barrier, which is a significant improvement. Unless the 17 Air’s camera features substantial digital zoom enhancements, it will be challenging to part ways with the telephoto lens.
  • Potential battery drawbacks: This remains largely ambiguous, but it’s reasonable to assume the iPhone 17 Air may not perform as well in battery life compared to its thicker Pro counterparts. The extent of this difference is what concerns me. A slight reduction could be manageable, but the specifics will need to be scrutinized.
  • Uncertainty regarding display size: I find the size of the iPhone 16 Pro quite suitable. I enjoy using my device one-handed while on the move, and I actually preferred the slightly smaller 15 Pro display over the enlarged 16 Pro version. Hence, the prospect of shifting from 6.3 to 6.6 inches with the 17 Air is not particularly enticing. However, the slimmer profile might make the larger size more comfortable for one-handed use, so I’m reserving my judgment for now.

Is the 17 Air worth the trade-offs?

It would be challenging to give up so much for a new iPhone model, but we’ll need to wait for Apple’s complete lineup reveal to make the most informed choice. So far, we have much information regarding the 17 Air, but considerably less about the 17 Pro and Pro Max.

I have a strong inclination to purchase the 17 Air despite the concessions involved. However, if the 17 Pro introduces some standout updates exclusive to Pro users?

Apple could make my decision even more burdensome.
