Numerous times, it has been reported that Apple will use OLED instead of mini-LED in their 2024 iPad Pro versions.

Even though this improvement in displays should have a number of benefits, there hasn’t been a set launch date for these tablets up until now, assuming this rumor is accurate. According to reports, the panels are thinner than rigid OLED panels thanks to a novel hybrid technology that supposedly mixes bendable OLED thin-film encapsulating (TFE) with stiff OLED glass substrates. Due to the lack of a backlighting layer, the technique also has fewer expenses for manufacture than flexible OLED panels.

Two glass substrates are used in conventional rigid OLED panels, however in a hybrid OLED panel, the upper glass substrate is swapped out for TFE. The panel becomes thinner as a result, and the rest of the bottom substrate of glass is etched to a thickness of just 0.2mm from 0.5mm.

LG is working on a concurrent etch-and-cut technique to reduce risk because the resultant “Extre-thin glass” will be more susceptible to shattering while being transported to the next phase in the manufacturing line. Additionally, during its Q2 2023 conference, Apple disclosed that iPad revenue had decreased from the prior quarter. An early release of the OLED iPad Pro line could be a strategy to appease investors next year and quickly boost sales.

In 2021, when the first 12.9-inch iPad Pro featuring mini-LED was made available, many of the evaluations included something referred to as “blooming.” Although OLED is still regarded as the best available technology, mini-LED, which Apple presently utilizes in its 12.9-inch iPad Pro and MacBook Pro, is better than LCD displays. Compared to mini-LED dimming zone technology, the self-lighting pixels produce significantly superior image quality. Burn-in still poses a problem, but there are steps that may be taken in software to lessen those worries.
