Netflix

This is another endearing character in ‘Enola Holmes’. You won’t be able to take your eyes off the finely dressed Viscount Tewkesbury, Marquess of Basilwether. The role is played by Loui Partridge, a 17-year-old British actor who has been seen in movies like Paddington 2. He is also expected to appear in ‘Lost Girls’ which will be a new take on the Peter Pan classic.

Starting from the back story of the Viscount, ‘Enola Holmes’ has given proper space to this new character and is a crucial element in the unfolding of the plot. You can also gush about some of the cutest moments of the runaway teens together.

Who Wrote ‘Enola Holmes’?

The character of Enola Holmes has been derived from Nancy Springer’s retake on the classics of Arthur Conan Doyle. The six books in Nancy’s Sherlock-related crime fiction series include a different take on the legendary detective. It also weaves the story of Sherlock’s childhood, his back story and his little sister Enola Holmes in its plot. All the six books delve into Enola Holmes’ mysteries. It is like a parallel series to the Victorian author, Conan Doyle’s series. The original Sherlock Holmes books don’t mention anything about Enola and have a different angle of presenting Sherlock Holmes.

Why Does Enola Holmes Talk To The Camera?

Enola Holmes

Enola is Alone spelled backward. This is not a spoiler. You had to know this in order to fall in love with the film. Her character has been sketched in such a manner that it makes perfect sense when she takes an aside and directly communicates to the audience by talking to the camera. Also, it’s fun.

Plus, this is where we’ve found the Fleabag or Phoebe Waller-Bridge connection. We’ve seen the exact representation of this style in another Netflix blockbuster: ‘Fleabag’. Both Fleabag and Enola constantly break the fourth wall and directly talk to the camera. Plus, the credits of ‘Enola Holmes’ also thanks Waller-Bridge.

Who Plays Enola’s Mother?

We find Helena Bonham Carter on screen playing Enola Holmes’ mother. This Academy Award winner star of Fight Club, The Crown and her gothic avatar as Bellatrix Lestrange is forever etched in our hearts. ‘Enola Holmes’ Feminist Themes

The movie presents a serious portrayal of feminist themes revolving around the crisis of women’s suffrage. The movie is set in the 1880s and sets the narrative around proto-feminists and women’s rights campaigners. We see that Enola’s mother is educated in The Subjection of Women by John Stuart Mill who fought for women’s rights during that period. Enola’s character is also set as a feisty figure defying the current societal norms.

Arthur Conan Doyle’s Estate Sues Netflix

Even before the release of this film, Arthur Conan Doyle’s estate sued Enola Holmes’ producers, Netflix and Nancy Springer in June 2020. Majority of the Sherlock Holmes books are in the public domain. However, it is a later book that is causing a problem. This book deals with the emotional side of Sherlock Holmes and was published in 1927. The recent lawsuit claims that this film is an infringement on the copyright of that book which will only become public after 95 years of the date of publication.
