  • The final day to claim a $1,400 stimulus payment from the federal government is April 15, 2025.
  • The IRS estimates that $1 billion in unclaimed 2021 tax refunds is owed to approximately 1.1 million Americans.
  • Mississippi residents are entitled to about $8.3 million in unclaimed refunds.
  • The deadline to file 2021 taxes and request any owed refunds is also April 15, 2025.

Are you potentially missing out on financial assistance? You may be entitled to a $1,400 stimulus payment from the federal government. If you haven’t already received one, there’s still time for eligible individuals to meet the deadline. However, today, April 15, marks the last day.

Many taxpayers are also forgoing income tax returns, including from prior years, due to non-filing.

The Internal Revenue Service initiated sending approximately $2.4 billion to 1 million taxpayers for Recovery Rebate Credit payments that were not claimed back in December.

Additionally, the IRS estimates that around 1.1 million Americans are missing their 2021 income tax refunds due to unfiled taxes, totaling roughly $1 billion in unclaimed funds.

This deadline is also fast approaching, and if missed, the funds will revert to the U.S. Treasury.

According to the IRS, Mississippi taxpayers stand to receive approximately $8,283,600 altogether. About 9,600 individuals who have not filed their 2021 taxes could receive an average payment of $701.

Here’s what you should know about your eligibility for a stimulus check in Mississippi and the filing deadline.

Who is eligible for the stimulus check?

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reports that over a million taxpayers across the U.S. did not claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax return.

This refundable credit is designed for those who did not receive one or more Economic Impact Payments (or stimulus checks) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

How can I claim the check? What is the amount?

No action is needed on your part to claim it; payments will be sent automatically.

The IRS has indicated that checks, with a maximum value of $1,400, will be issued through paper checks or direct deposits into the bank account provided with a 2023 tax return. A separate letter will accompany the payment notification.

What if I have not filed my 2021 taxes? What is the deadline?

You have until April 15, 2025, to file any back-year returns.

The IRS has mentioned that you may still qualify for the check, but only those who have filed their taxes will be eligible.

You must also file your 2021 taxes to receive any refunds that may be owed to you.
