Hardware and Build Quality
Upon unboxing, the iSteady M7 immediately conveys a sense of quality. It is more substantial and heavier compared to the DJI Osmo Mobile series, yet compensates with exceptional build quality. The grip is comfortable enough for extended periods of use, and the controls are intuitively designed — a significant advantage when making quick adjustments while shooting on the move.
Included with the iSteady M7 is a sturdy carrying case reminiscent of those offered with DJI’s Ronin series, which is a significant upgrade over the fabric bags provided with DJI’s Osmo gimbals.
Stabilization and Shooting Experience
The primary function of a gimbal is to produce smooth footage, and the iSteady M7 excels in this area. I tested it while walking, running, and performing slow pans, and the 3-axis stabilization proved impressive. It even managed sudden turns or quick movements with remarkable ease.
It offers multiple shooting modes, including:

Smart Tracking

For solo creators, this feature is a game-changer. You can film without needing a dedicated camera operator, and there’s no reliance on app-based software tracking (which can be unreliable at times).
App Experience
The Hohem Joy app unlocks additional creative features like motion time-lapses, panorama modes, and gesture control. While the UI may not be as polished as Apple’s or an app like LumaFusion, it’s functional and user-friendly.
One aspect I appreciated is the ability to program motion paths for consistent camera movements — incredibly useful for product shoots, tutorials, or any scenario needing uniformity.
Battery Life
Hohem claims the M7 can achieve up to 18 hours of runtime with the AI module off, and around 10 hours with it active. While I haven’t completely drained the battery in one go, I managed several lengthy filming sessions without needing to recharge. Additionally, the USB-C passthrough charging feature allows you to charge your iPhone while filming.
Downsides?
There are minimal drawbacks to mention, but a few things are worth noting:
- At approximately 1.3 pounds, it’s heavier than some competing models. While not a dealbreaker, it may be a consideration for prolonged handheld usage.
- The AI module, while excellent, does add some bulk to the top of your phone. This may not be a major issue, but it’s something to keep in mind if you’re using a heavier device like the iPhone Pro Max.
