At WWDC25 yesterday, Apple unveiled a significant update to the Wallet app aimed at enhancing digital ID adoption in the U.S.: passport support.
Apple initially introduced Drivers Licenses and IDs in Apple Wallet with the release of iOS 15 in 2021, but its rollout has been limited to a few U.S. states. Currently, it covers 9 states plus Puerto Rico, with plans to extend to 3 additional states soon. However, this is still far from encompassing all 50 states.
In an exciting development, Apple will soon incorporate U.S. passport support in Apple Wallet, enabling every U.S. citizen to access a digital ID on their smartphone. Personally, this news thrilled me.
As per Apple’s website, the digital passport will be usable at TSA checkpoints, online, and in face-to-face transactions.
Despite the widespread availability of digital IDs, it remains advisable to carry a physical passport, especially during international travel. Nonetheless, the ability to access it online is a fantastic convenience.
