While Apple is scoring big with new iPhone apps lately, it’s missing the mark entirely regarding iPad support.
Leading off was Journal, an app exclusive to iPhone that launched alongside iOS 17.2. Apple had another chance to deliver a robust version for iPad with iOS and iPadOS 18, but while the iPhone iteration has received plenty of attention, the iPad variation is still not available.
A year ago, Apple made significant progress with Apple Sports on iPhone. The app has seen considerable enhancement in recent updates, yet it remains limited to iPhone users. The countdown begins to see which arrives first: an Apple Sports widget or an Apple Sports version for iPad.
Now let’s head to the ballgame, but don’t count on an iPad invite. Apple’s new Invites app can send out invitations across various devices, but an iPad version is still nowhere to be seen.
Fortunately, the iPhone versions of Sports and Invites do function on the iPad.
The absence of a Journal version for iPad is particularly disheartening for iPad users since it’s a system app that cannot be downloaded separately from the App Store. This means users can’t even access the iPhone version, which would be compatible and visually appealing in Stage Manager mode.
iPad users may have hoped that the era of iPhone-exclusive apps from Apple was behind them. After all, Apple eventually introduced both Weather and Calculator to iPad. Yet, these compelling and genuinely useful project apps remain confined to the iPhone for the time being.
Apple is delivering an impressive performance with its latest apps, but when it comes to rolling out iPad versions, it may be time to call in the closer.
