A notable aspect of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max is clear: Apple is focused on enhancing the Pro camera system while scaling back on the iPhone 17 Air. Recently, a leak from Jon Prosser has revealed an exclusive software feature poised to launch with this year’s Pro models in the Camera app.
Simultaneous video recording with front and rear cameras set for iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max
In a recent video, Jon Prosser provided an intriguing glimpse into the possible design of iOS 19.
He concluded the video with an exciting leak that pertains to iOS 19, but is primarily relevant to Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 lineup.
According to Prosser, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will feature an exclusive capability in the Camera app: recording video from both the front and rear cameras at the same time.
As illustrated in the above mockup, the functionality will resemble being on a FaceTime call, where the majority of the screen displays the rear camera feed, while a smaller fram shows the front camera feed.
While iPhones have allowed recording from multiple cameras using third-party applications for years, this is the first time Apple has reportedly incorporated this feature into its built-in Camera app, set to debut this year.
DMN’s Perspective
This feature is bound to be a welcome addition for YouTubers and video creators; however, it’s certainly disappointing for it to be exclusive to the 17 Pro and Pro Max—particularly since third-party applications can already offer this on a range of devices.
It’s possible that the A19 Pro chip, which will only be available in Pro models, makes this feature feasible in a way the standard A19 cannot. Alternatively, Apple may be implementing something unique that third-party apps haven’t managed as of yet. Of course, Apple could also aim to incentivize upgrades to the Pro model, as they typically do.
Interestingly, this leak emerged mere hours after I expressed the following regarding the iPhone 17 Air’s single camera limitation:
Will Apple unveil some innovative new camera capabilities on the iPhone 17 Pro that might change my mind? It’s possible. However, based on my current understanding, I feel quite comfortable stating that the iPhone 17 Air is the right choice for me.
