Meta is expressing regret over an error that led to disturbing and violent imagery being displayed in the Reels feeds of certain Instagram users.

“We have resolved an issue that caused some users to be shown content in their Instagram Reels feed that should not have been recommended,” a Meta spokesperson remarked Thursday in a statement, without going into specifics about the issue.

The apology followed a day after numerous Instagram users reported receiving content recommendations labeled as “not safe for work,” which included short-form videos depicting gore and violence and coming with a “sensitive content” warning.

According to company policy, Meta aims to shield users from unsettling content and actively removes particularly graphic or violent material.

This incident follows a policy adjustment by Meta in January, which involved ending its third-party fact-checking program and replacing it with a community-driven system reminiscent of the one utilized by Elon Musk’s X social media platform.
