The announcement of Apple Intelligence coincided with the release of iOS 18, which became available to the public last October when iOS 18.1 was launched. While many applications inherently support Apple Intelligence features, developers have the discretion to opt out – and it appears that Meta has chosen to do just that.
According to a report from the Brazilian blog Sorcererhat Tech, functionalities like Writing Tools, allowing users to compose, edit, and proofread text using Apple Intelligence, have been disabled in all Meta applications, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and Threads.
Typically, iPhone and iPad users can utilize Writing Tools by tapping on a text entry box. However, this feature is absent from Meta’s iOS applications. Furthermore, users cannot create or share Genmoji, Apple’s AI-generated custom emojis, in these apps. The report highlights that Meta has also disabled the addition of keyboard stickers and Memoji in Instagram Stories, a feature that was previously accessible.
It is not surprising that Meta has not disclosed the reasons for the unavailability of Apple Intelligence in its iOS apps. However, one might speculate that the company aims to encourage users to utilize Meta AI instead of competitors like Apple Intelligence. Meta AI is integrated into nearly all of Meta’s apps and enables users to modify text and generate images.
A report from the WSJ last year indicated that Apple and Meta had considered a possible collaboration to integrate Llama, Meta’s AI language model, into Apple Intelligence. However, Apple reportedly chose to abandon the agreement due to disagreements over the company’s privacy policies. Additionally, Apple and Meta often find themselves in disputes regarding App Store regulations.
This situation regrettably means that iOS users are unable to utilize the benefits of Apple Intelligence in some of the most widely used applications globally. Hopefully, there will be a shift in this approach in the future.
