After receiving two Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments in February, beneficiaries will get their payment for April as expected.
SSI checks are generally issued on the first of each month, unless that day falls on a weekend or federal holiday.
This April, the 1st was a regular Tuesday.
Therefore, payments were processed on April 1.
However, next month, recipients will receive two SSI checks due to a unique scheduling situation.
The May SSI check will be deposited on May 1, followed by the June payment on May 30.
Since June 1 falls on a weekend, there will be no SSI payment during June.
This unusual pattern will recur in August, when SSI payments for that month and September will be deposited on August 1 and August 29, respectively.
WHAT IS SSI?
Supplemental Security Income provides financial support to individuals who have limited income and resources, are 65 years or older, blind, or have a qualifying disability.
Children with qualifying disabilities may also qualify for SSI benefits, as per the Social Security Administration (SSA).
Typically, adults eligible for SSI earn no more than $2,019 monthly from work.
Those who think they may qualify for SSI can begin the application process online, visit their local Social Security office, or contact the SSA during business hours.
For anyone considering applying for Social Security or SSI soon, the SSA recommends setting up an online account ahead of time, as new “stronger identity verification procedures,” including online identity proofing, will be implemented starting March 31.
HOW PAYMENTS ARE ISSUED
Approximately 7.4 million Americans receive SSI payments monthly.
Around one-third of these recipients also get Social Security payments.
Social Security payments for retirees and older beneficiaries are usually distributed throughout the month on Wednesdays.
Payment dates are based on birthdates.
Those born between the 1st and 10th receive their benefits on the second Wednesday; individuals born from the 11th to the 20th are paid on the third Wednesday; and those born after the 20th receive payments on the fourth Wednesday.
Individuals who started receiving Social Security before May 1997 get their payments on the 3rd of each month.
If those individuals also receive SSI, it will be deposited on the 1st of the month.
WHEN SOCIAL SECURITY PAYMENTS ARE MADE
Social Security payments are made on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of each month based on the recipient’s birthdate:
- Second Wednesday: For individuals born between the 1st and 10th of the month
- Third Wednesday: For those born between the 11th and 20th
- Fourth Wednesday: For those born between the 21st and 31st
