Opera Unveils the Future of Web Browsing with Its AI-Powered Operator

We’ve seen various examples of how AI can enhance user experiences, with AI agents significantly streamlining tasks. Recently, the well-known web browser Opera introduced its AI-powered Browser Operator, and it is now operational.

Opera’s Browser Operator can browse the web for you

With Opera’s Browser Operator, users can rely on AI for functionalities beyond simple web searches. You can instruct the browser to purchase items or share links with others. Thanks to AI capabilities, the browser interacts with elements on web pages and manages your browsing session.

Although Browser Operator was initially conceptual, DMN was invited by Opera for an exclusive demonstration of this feature. In the demonstration, Henrick Lexow, Opera’s director of marketing technologies, commanded the browser to order flowers for delivery to a specific hotel. The browser adeptly handled the task by searching for flowers on Google, visiting a suggested online retailer, selecting a bouquet, and finalizing the order.

More impressively, the Browser Operator automatically filled out the order forms, including the recipient’s address, all without any user intervention. While still under development and not yet available in public beta, the advancements since its initial announcement are notable.

Of course, some users may express concerns about privacy with such features, but Opera assures that Browser Operator is designed with privacy as a priority. The feature operates locally within the web browser, avoiding the need to upload screenshots or video captures of webpage content.

According to Opera, the Browser Operator leverages the “DOM tree and browser layout data to gain context,” which allows it to perform tasks without accessing the entirety of the computer. The company anticipates launching Browser Operator soon as part of its AI Feature Drop initiative.
