Earlier today, President Trump announced a temporary 90-day pause on tariffs for most countries, but China is notably excluded. The tariff on China has actually increased from 104% to 125%, taking effect immediately.
To recap the recent changes: the China tariff began at 20%, then rose to 54%, followed by 104%, and now has reached 125%.
Update on 4/10: The tariff on imports from China has climbed to 145%.
Implications of Trump’s Tariff on China
While Apple sources components from various countries, including Vietnam and India, China remains its primary supplier.
This ongoing fluctuation in tariff rates indicates one thing: if you are considering purchasing a new Apple product or planning an upgrade, now may be the time to act. It is highly unlikely that Apple can manage to sell Chinese-made products under a 125% tariff without imposing significant price increases.
For instance, the production cost of the iPhone 16 Pro 256GB is estimated at $580, which includes parts, testing, and assembly. When the 125% tariff is applied, the total cost upon arrival in the US, before any markup from Apple, would approximate $1305. Even if Apple opts for a minimal profit margin, pricing the phone at $1399 would represent a $300 increase compared to the current price of the iPhone 16 Pro 256GB.
Apple does manufacture some iPhones in India, potentially allowing them to mitigate some of the impacts of these tariffs. These figures are simply intended to illustrate the potential consequences of the tariff increases.
If you’re in need of a new Apple product, it’s advisable not to delay your purchase in light of the uncertain price ramifications. However, for those who aren’t in an immediate rush, there’s no need for panic buying—this advice is specifically for those who require a product soon.
