Severance Season 3: What We Know So Far

The finale of Severance’s second season is set to release this week, sparking numerous inquiries regarding the series’ plans for a third season. Here’s what we currently know about the future of Severance on Apple TV+.

Anticipation for Season 3 Renewal Announcement

As of now, Apple has not made an official announcement regarding the renewal of Severance for a third season. However, it’s safe to say that the announcement is a matter of timing rather than possibility.

Previously, when Severance’s first season concluded, Apple TV+ announced the show’s second season renewal just days ahead of the finale. This strategy seems to be a trend with the platform.

It appears likely that we can expect an announcement regarding the renewal of Severance for a third season very soon.

Who knows? We might even receive a multi-season renewal, similar to previous announcements for shows like Silo and Slow Horses.

Writers Actively Developing Season 3 with a Significant New Member

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ben Stiller revealed that the work on Severance season 3 is “underway,” with a team of writers actively collaborating in Los Angeles.

Last spring, Puck reported that there was a significant alteration in the creative team behind Severance.

Due to potential conflicts between creator Dan Erickson and writer-producer Mark Friedman during the show’s earlier seasons, Ben Stiller brought on board a notable new addition.

Matt Belloni from Puck wrote:

Stiller interviewed various writer-producers to establish a strong concept for the third season prior to the anticipated WGA strike and ultimately secured Beau Willimon. Willimon, the creator of House of Cards, who recently contributed to Disney+’s acclaimed Andor, joined the project. He quickly noticed that there were multiple needs for Season 2, as episode budgets escalated to the $20 million range. For several months, Willimon has assisted in shaping the latter part of Season 2 and forming a framework for Season 3, although this has led to significant delays.

It appears that while Willimon had a hand in the contributions to Season 2, we will begin to see his more pronounced influence in the upcoming Season 3.

Viewers who have kept up with Severance since its inaugural season are aware that there was a considerable gap between the two seasons.

Due to production challenges, rewrites, and industry strikes, nearly three years elapsed between the first and second seasons of Severance.

As far as Season 3’s timeline is concerned, all we know is that Ben Stiller hopes “not to make the audience wait three years this time.”

Stiller and creator Erickson have previously discussed their tendencies toward perfectionism, so even if Season 3 doesn’t face the same production challenges, it’s still improbable that we will see a return of the series anytime soon.

In all likelihood, we can expect Severance season 3 to premiere on Apple TV+ in 2027, with late 2026 being the earliest feasible timeframe we can anticipate.

Apple TV+ is available for a monthly fee of $9.99 and boasts popular shows and movies such as Ted Lasso, Severance, The Morning Show, Silo, and Shrinking. Additionally, various options for free viewing are available.
