On Wednesday, Snapchat revealed an exciting new feature for its users, though it is exclusive to some. Beginning today, members of Snapchat Platinum (the platform’s premium subscription service) will gain access to innovative AI-generated Lenses.
Snapchat unveils new AI Lenses
For those who may not be aware, Snapchat Lenses function as AR filters within the app, enabling users to take photos and videos enhanced with dynamic AR effects. With the help of artificial intelligence, these Lenses are set to become even more lifelike. Snapchat mentions that it has developed an “in-house built generative video model” to fuel the new AI Video Lenses.
Currently, users have access to three AI Video Lenses. Two of these, named Raccoon and Fox, bring “furry friends” to life, interacting with the user. The other new AI filter, known as Spring Flowers, creates a zoom-out effect as if the user is holding a bouquet of flowers.
Snapchat Platinum subscribers can discover the new Lenses in the carousel alongside other AR filters. Since the AI video generation takes some time, users can still navigate through the app while the video is being created. The company also indicates that additional AI Video Lenses will be forthcoming.
Coincidence or not, Instagram announced in December that it is also working on lifelike AI-based filters to eventually replace the existing AR filters. However, these AI filters have yet to be released to Instagram users.
Snapchat is available for free on the App Store and requires an iPhone or iPad operating on iOS 14 or later.
