Trends in Release Timing for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS: A Chart Overview

With WWDC25 concluding, the next significant event on Apple’s schedule is the fall OS release period. Although many anticipate how these launches typically unfold, a recent chart circulating online provides a clear visual summary of the OS releases since 2013.

Originally shared by Reddit user alexkaessner, the Datawrapper interactive timeline illustrates the familiar trend: a Fall Keynote in early September (blue dots), followed by the release of iOS and iPadOS about one week later (red dots), and macOS arriving a bit later (orange dots).

Notably, macOS saw a delay from 2019 to 2022, frequently launching well into October and even November. However, Apple has successfully narrowed this timeline in recent years, with macOS releases aligning more closely with iOS and iPadOS, including a joint release last year.

What to anticipate for 2025

Based on past patterns, iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 are expected to be released in mid-to-late September, shortly after Apple’s autumn iPhone event.

As for macOS Tahoe 26, there remains uncertainty. Last year’s simultaneous launch of macOS with iOS and iPadOS was unprecedented, and according to this chart, it’s still not the typical scenario.

However, release schedules may evolve. Apple is currently managing more intricate cross-platform features, fresh AI integrations, and the demands of catering to various device types. While this year’s Liquid Glass UI revamp may help streamline processes, it could equally introduce new hurdles.

It’s also essential to remember that iOS releases coincide with iPhone unveilings, and Apple has encountered supply chain challenges amid ongoing US-China trade tensions. Although recent days indicate a potential easing, history suggests that certainty in this area is not assured.
