Trump Allegedly Prioritizes Halting the TikTok Ban

As one of the most downloaded applications on the App Store, TikTok is facing the possibility of a ban in the US starting early 2025. However, a fresh report suggests that President-elect Donald Trump is poised to intervene and prevent the ban from taking effect.

Trump’s Evolving Stance on TikTok

According to Jeff Stein, Drew Harwell, and Jacob Bogage in The Washington Post:

It is anticipated that President-elect Donald Trump will seek to halt a potential U.S. ban on TikTok next year, having pledged during his campaign to preserve the popular social media platform if he was victorious. The app has a January deadline to secure a new owner outside of China or it will be barred from accessing U.S. users, following a law passed with bipartisan support in April.

One of the individuals cited in the article is Kellyanne Conway, who states, “There are numerous ways to hold China accountable without alienating 180 million U.S. users each month.”

Trump has made the preservation of TikTok a key promise in his campaign, marking a significant pivot from his earlier administration when his ‘America First’ approach often led to friction with China.

What Lies Ahead for TikTok?

Under a law enacted earlier this year and signed by President Biden, should TikTok be banned, it will take effect just before Trump resumes office.

It remains uncertain how Trump might attempt to prevent the ban. Whether he would act before its implementation in January or seek to overturn it after entering office with a Republican majority in congress is still unclear.

Regardless, the future of TikTok in the United States remains shrouded in ambiguity.
