  • Starkville, Mississippi, has earned the title of the best small town in the South from USA Today for the second year in a row.
  • This ranking focused on towns under 25,000 in population that embody the true essence of Southern hospitality, history, and charm.
  • Starkville stands out for its vibrant arts community, historic districts, birdwatching spots, and diverse dining options.

A city in Mississippi has been named the best small town in the South for the second consecutive year. The USA Today ranking sought areas that showcased the hospitality, history, and charm characteristic of the Southern region, with populations of under 25,000.

An expert panel nominated potential locations deemed the most enjoyable for vacationing, sightseeing, immersive nature experiences, exquisite dining, and cultural exploration. Following this, editors reviewed the selections and allocated four weeks for public voting.

Consequently, one collegiate town has secured its claim to fame.

Which small town tops the list in the South?

Starkville received the top accolade in the South this year.

“Despite housing Mississippi State University, Starkville is much more than a traditional college town. It boasts a thriving arts scene, several historic districts, abundant birdwatching opportunities, and a plethora of amazing eateries. Don’t miss the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library, filled with a wealth of artifacts and correspondence,” stated USAT.

According to the 2020 Census, Starkville had 24,360 residents. Recent estimates, however, suggest the population has just surpassed 25,000, raising questions about how long it can remain on the small towns list if growth continues.
