Apple’s AI notification summaries can be quite helpful when they function properly; however, due to Apple Intelligence being available only on select devices, many iPhone users haven’t been able to access this feature. In response, WhatsApp is in the process of testing its own AI-driven tool that summarizes unread messages across chats, groups, and channels. Here’s a breakdown of how it operates.
As reported by WABetaInfo (via Tecnoblog), WhatsApp’s AI summaries are currently being trialed on Android devices and require opting in through a feature dubbed Private Processing.
After activation, if there is a significant backlog of messages, a new button labeled “Summarize with Meta AI” will replace the typical “X unread messages” notification. Selecting this option provides a concise overview of the conversation.
WhatsApp assures users that none of the message content is stored or associated with the user in any way. All processing takes place in a secure environment within the cloud, and summaries are deleted immediately after they are created.
Additionally, as noted by WABetaInfo, the feature will automatically be disabled in chats utilizing Advanced Privacy settings, guaranteeing that no AI processing occurs in these instances, even where encryption is enabled.
Currently, the message summarization feature is accessible only to a limited group of users in the Android beta phase and is being gradually rolled out. WhatsApp has not disclosed any information regarding its availability on iOS, language support, or compatibility across different regions.
Writing Assistance
Another AI-based feature in development is called “Writing Help,” which aims to assist users in refining the tone or clarity of their messages before they are sent. Similar to the message summarization tool, it would also utilize the Private Processing framework to ensure user privacy.
