Taxpayers may incur penalties from the IRS for late filings, failure to pay owed taxes on time, inaccuracies in returns, or if proper information returns are not provided in a timely and accurate manner.

The IRS imposes a 0.5% penalty for late payments, or 0.25% for months under an installment agreement, based on the unpaid tax amount for each month or part of a month of delay.

This penalty escalates to 1% per month if the IRS issues a notice of intent to levy and taxes are not settled within 10 days of the notification, according to the IRS.

If you require an extension, you can request one from the IRS, which allows you to file until October 15, 2025. However, payments must still be completed by April 15, 2025.

Deadline for $1,400 stimulus check claims

The deadline to claim the $1,400 stimulus check, referred to as the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, is April 15, 2025. To receive this stimulus, individuals must file their 2021 tax returns by this date.

The 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit and its cutoff date serve as a refund for any missed stimulus payments during the pandemic. The IRS offers tools such as the “Get My Payment” tool for individuals to verify payment statuses and stimulus eligibility.
