apple iphone 12

Although it will be some time before Apple launches the 2020 iPhones lineup, there are loads of rumors already flocking the markets. Even though the device hasn’t yet been launched, with its launching date sometime in October, the naming could conveniently be iPhone 12, and its variant iPhone 12 Pro model. But this rests on whether Apple decided to follow through on its naming scheme for which it is so famous.

Amidst the rumors, the iPhone is said to bring about a couple of changes that haven’t been seen since the iPhone 10- released three years back. The design changes imply that we would be seeing the Apple iPhone 12 in four different variants- 5.4 inches, 6.1 inches, 6.1 inches (iPhone 12 Max), and 6.7 inches.

According to the aforementioned rumors, the iPhone 12 models with sizes 6.7 inches and 6.1 inches would be on the higher ends of the price range- with features such as a triple-lens camera. On the other hand, models which are 5.4 inches, and 6.1 inches, the camera would be dual-lens, with the price being affordable. It has also been mentioned that every iPhone brought out in 2020 would be useful in furthering OLED display technology in the digital market. The higher-end models could also feature a ‘Promotion’ refresh rate of 120Hz- something that might not be guaranteed in the present due to constraints led down by batteries.

apple iphone 12 Lineup

The 5.7-inch model will be the smallest iPhone that Apple has released since it released the SE. On the other spectrum, the 6.7-inch model will be the largest iPhone ever released, topping the 6.5 inch iPhone 11 Pro Max. The other two models would have the same measurements as the iPhone 11 series. As far as designs go, the iPhones released this year would have an upheaval in design, bringing back the metallic frame of iPhone 4, or the iPad Pro. The iPhones back in the day had a flat finish courtesy of the metallic frames, which could be an integral part of the newer iPhones and iPad Pros released this year.

There have been rumors circulating that the Apple iPhone 12 Max Pro would have a TrueDepth camera feature which will reduce the notch size that is designed at the front. But this could simply be a rumor and therefore not contain much truth. There are also a couple of rumors circulating that Apple would release a triple-lens rear camera system which would be 3D so as to measure the depth of the object through lasers.

Needless to say, this would really improve the photographic features of the cell phone. On the 2020 iPad Pro, this 3D laser will be featured at the LiDAR scanner, but you might only find it on cell phones that are high on the price list.

2020 is said to be the year when Apple finally discard the 4G network for 5G. All the models of the iPhone 12 (the lower end as well as Max Pro) will simultaneously link up with 5G networks which are much faster than the 4G LTE networks. But there is a catch with this- not every country has a mmWAve network already implanted in their network system. This would mean that several Apple iPhone 12 models in many of the developing countries wouldn’t be able to avail the mmWave super-fast connectivity.

The 2020 iPhone 12 will come armed with an Apple-designed 5-nanometer A14 chip which has been carefully curated and manufactured by TSMC. The very utility of the A14 chip is to simply increase the speed and the efficiency of the unity- thereby saving battery life. And this becomes extremely necessary for 5G uses a lot of battery to work.

There have been additional rumors of Apple not including in a power adapter or Earpods in the box containing the iPhone 12. It has been suggested that this step would reduce the costs of packaging and production. On its behalf, Apple is going to bring out a 20 W power adapter that users would have to purchase from Apple Stores or e-commerce websites. What is exciting is that the USB-C to lightning cable might just get an upgrade- bringing forth the much-awaited braided design for cable.

Prospective Name for the 2020 iPhone 12

The naming plans for the Apple iPhone has been quite complicated ever since both iPhone 8, and iPhone X came to the market in 2017. This resulted in iPhone 9 being shunted completely. 2018 brought with itself several more confusing names such as iPhone XS, XS Max, and iPhone XR. But the next iPhone for the year, the iPhone decided to go back to the old naming scheme of the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max.

Previously, Apple’s naming schedule involved having a numerical increase one year, with the next year’s iPhone having the ‘S’ year. But considering the developments the latest iPhone is bringing to the market, it is believed that this would be a whole new iPhone number than simply 11S. The lower-end model will be called the iPhone 12, with the higher ends being termed iPhone 12 Pro Series, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Let’s look at some of the names of the subsequent year’s iPhone since its inception in 2007.

  1. 2007 – iPhone
  2. 2008 – iPhone 3G
  3. 2009 – iPhone 3GS
  4. 2010 – iPhone 4
  5. 2011 – iPhone 4s
  6. 2012 – iPhone 5
  7. 2013 – iPhone 5s, and iPhone 5c
  8. 2014 – iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
  9. 2015 – iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus
  10. 2016 – iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus
  11. 2017 – iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X
  12. 2018 – iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR
  13. 2019 – iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max

True, we won’t really hit the nail on the head with the names of the upcoming iPhone models, but if history is any indication- then they would definitely be called this year’s Apple iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Size Options For iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max

 iphone 12 design

There have been rumors circulating about Apple offering four variants of the same iPhone in three sizes. If this were to be true, this would be the first time that Apple would be introducing new dimensions in quite a few years. As far as rumors go, the models will come in a 5.4-inch version, a 6.7-inch version, and a couple of 6.1-inch versions. The first one is slightly smaller than the iPhone 11 Pro, while the 6.7 inch is quite massive- in fact, it is supposed to be bigger than every other iPhone ever made. The 5.4-inch model will resemble the measurements of the iPhone 8 in a lot of ways.

One of the 6.1-inch models and the 6.7-inch models would be on the higher spectrum on the price range. Whereas, the other 6.1-inch model will come in the lower end, along with the 5.4-inch model. The 5.4-inch model would be the immediate successor of the iPhone 11 series. The higher priced ones would come with a triple-lens camera setup, while the lower-priced ones would have a dual-lens setup.

Trying Out the 5.4 inch Apple iPhone

There have been images designed that will help prospective buyers visualize the size of the 5.4-inch phone. As rumors go, this will definitely be the smallest iPhone launched by Apple in quite a few years and will appeal to those who would be looking for something that would be small yet highly effective.

iPhone 12 Specs- Design

iphone design

The iPhones of 2020 would feature a design that will completely overhaul everything iPhone has designed in the last couple of years. The frame would be metallic, and reminiscent of the iPhone 4. Ming-Chi Kuo, the analyst of Apple believes that iPhone 12 is going to utilize a much more complicated design of segmentation, which would include trenching, and newer injection molding procedures.

The complete design will be somewhat identical to the iPhone 4 or the much-acclaimed iPad Pro, complete with a squared-edge frame of stainless steel set between a couple of pieces of glass. The newer iPhones will definitely feature a steel frame that is stainless, replacing the rounded frame that adorns current iPhones. Also, the front and the back of the iPhone will have a body of glass, as iPhones do.

The reason why the company is going to inject metal molding inside the frame is quite interesting. It is to help reduce the impact that a shield of metal might have on the high-frequency efficiency in transmission of the internal antenna. According to Kuo, Apple is going to use tempered glass, or sapphire which will definitely protect the grooves that sets up the frame. There has been a rumor of antenna lines which would be slightly wider than what Apple usually develops, but this hasn’t been verified yet.

Bloomberg states that a couple of the high-end Apple iPhones will definitely come with a new design that would have flat edges made of stainless steel replacing the curved edges. And this is certainly going to remind many loyal customers of Apple of the iPad Pro

Mac Otakara, a Japanese website believes that the iPhone 12 series variant with a 6.7-inch dimension is going to have a thickness of about 7.4 mm, making it even thinner than the iPhone 11 Pro Max, which had a thickness of about 8.1 mm. The iPhone 12 series variant is also going to be significantly taller than the iPhone 11 Pro Max. The 5.4-inch model, on the other hand, will find itself located somewhere in the ranges between the iPhone SE and the iPhone 8. All the different variants of the iPhone 12 are going to have different numbers of holes for microphones at the bottom.

A schematic leak of the Apple iPhone 12 shows a few more developments rather than just the tweaks in size, and the iPad Pro-style design. This leak apparently displays a lot of plans that Apple has in store for the iPhone 12. Some of them are:

  1. Camera lens would be slightly larger.
  2. The sides of the iPhone 12 would contain thicker antennas for 5G iPhone.
  3. The SIM tray has been shifted to the left side.
  4. The right side has an input that closely resembles a Smart Connector.
  5. There will be a reduction of a speaker hole on the speaker grille’s right.
  6. The power button will be situated a bit lower than it has been for all these years.

The iPhone 12 will also come with a lightning port, as Apple refuses to change it with USB-C.

iPhone 12 Specs- Colors

iPhone 12 colors

A single rumor has suggested that the iPhone 12 models might just come with a navy blue finish. Since Apple did bring out a midnight green for the iPhone 11 Pro, it isn’t exactly wrong to believe that Apple might just bring out a little blue in its iPhone lineup. According to another rumor, the iPhone 12 variants might come out in a flurry of colors like light blue, light orange, violet, and a whole host of other colors.

Mockups and Schematics of the Apple iPhone 12

The images that have been apparently leaked display the notch of the Apple iPhone 12 (rumors) which is one-third the size of the current iPhone notch. This perfectly aligns with the rumor that the 2020 iPhones lineup might have way smaller notches than previous models. Yet, the rumors can be extremely unreliable. Since there is no reliable source on where these leaked images come from, no one could pinpoint the truth out. Nonetheless, the document it came with seems to be a form of support documentation. Also, the images prove the other rumors about the triple-lens camera setup to be correct.

Schematics

A leaked CAD design of the iPhone 12 Pro Max was forked out in April, and it solved several rumors that had been spread for quite some time. The latest iPhone definitely took cues of design from the iPad Pro- a square-edged frame made of stainless steel, compact between two glass pieces, and an OLED display of 6.7 inches. The leak mentions that the iPhone 12 Pro Max has the thickness of 7.4 mm, which is quite slimmer than the iPhone 11 Pro Max’s thickness of 8.1 mm. But the camera bump, on the other hand, will be considerably thicker- 1.26 mm, an increase from 1.21 mm. But the size of the notch remains the same.

It’s true that there is no way to verify the sources for these renderings, but considering they match up to most rumors, it could very well be the truth. And there is a huge chance that the iPhone 12 (rumors) might just look like it has been mentioned above.

A schematic of the iPhone 12 surfacing in April mentioned that Apple might try to implement a much smaller notch. This will be done by integrating the speaker in the front of the device straight into the bezel. The updated layout of hardware also featured the proximity sensor, and the ambient light sensor- both moved up to a position that was more central amidst the TrueDepth camera system. There were a few 3D printed mockups of the Apple iPhone 12 which came indirectly from Apple’s supply chain in June, which provided a comparison of size.

Yet, there is a huge chance that these mockups might not be as accurate as thought to be, considering the setups for cameras depicted were quite different. The mockup didn’t feature the LiDAR 3D season which the 2020 iPhones are said to involve. But, the mockups do provide some verifiable information. According to them, the SIM tray will be relocated on the left side- below the volume buttons- so that space would be arranged for the 5G connectivity and antenna module.

There have been images on the website Weibo, said to be from the iPhone 12, which highlight a series of magnets in a circular array, located in the device. There are said to be 36 magnets, all for the purpose of mounting or charging. There are also certain rumors that this could simply be a preparation for the future- if Apple decided to launch its version of a wireless charger.

Case Molds

iPhone 12

There has been quite a series of schematic leaks of the iPhone 12, which display the CAD designs, along with the case molds. These, coming out in June of 2020, did offer a much closer look. The proof in question was a series of physical molds that had been developed based on these leaked schematics. Since there is money to be made if you are the first one who comes out with a proper case for the upcoming model, the molds do turn out to be quite accurately developed- after all, they are leaked through the supply chain.

Although the design of the molds is quite rudimentary, there can be no missing out on the iPhone 4 design style that iPhone 12 is following. But, one has to be careful when looking at molds, for the notch for the mold might not be similar to the actual mold. This is because mold makers don’t really need the actual measurement of the notch to create their mold.

Considering there have been rumors of the size of the notch of the Apple iPhone 12 being small, there is no way a mold of iPhone 12 leaks can either prove, or disprove it. In fact, the mold might not even have the perfect camera build for yet another reason- the mold doesn’t really need it to be accurate.

Goes without saying, there have been multiple conflicts regarding the information that has been passed through these rumors. For example, EverythingApplePro believes that the CAD leaks that help case makers make their cases are doling out correct information- and that the iPhone 12 won’t have a notch which is smaller in size.

iPhone12

It has also been suggested that the iPhone 12 Pro Max- the one with the 6.7-inch measurement, is the only one with LiDAR. This disproves the notion that both the Pro models- one of the 6.1 inches and the 6.7 inches, were going to have that feature. Also, there is going to be the presence of a ‘Smart Connector’, which is one of the newly devised mmWave antennas.

Dummy Models of the iPhone 12 leaks

There has been a leakage of dummy models for the iPhone 12- coming out all the way back in June- which did provide for a clear look. It helped case makers understand the different sizes that the newer models are undertaking. It also highlighted the difference between the sizes. For example, the 5.4 inch iPhone is going to be slightly bigger than the iPhone SE, whereas the 6.7 inches Apple iPhone 12 is going to be the biggest iPhone Apple has ever released.

iPhone 12

The dummy models have always been developed on the schematics that have been leaked, and are usually created for case makers. For, every case maker wants to be the first one to come out with a case when the iPhone models hit the markets. And considering these have been created for case makers, the measurements and specifications for all the hardware may not be the same. The setup for rear cameras, for example, might not be the same. But that doesn’t mean that the original iPhone 12 won’t have it.

Component Leaks

5.4 Inch Display

There have been images that display the panel of the iPhone 12 at 5.4 inches. This has been shared on Weibo- the social networking site back in July. And if these images are correct, then people can actually start believing that the iPhone 12 would come with smaller notches. Although the display is definitely small for iPhone models, existing iPhones have the size of the notch same on every variant of that model. This means that if Apple follows through that logic and ensures that all models of the iPhone 12 will have the same size, the notch might just be smaller in size.

Display Unit of the 5.4 Inch iPhone 12

iPhone 12 specs

The leak back in August gave developers a much clearer view of what could possibly be the display component of the Apple iPhone 12. The unit is completely different from the similar component that the iPhone 11 Pro model has, and this may also be related to several rumors of a single logic board going across the device to make way for the 5G iPhone.

Ram Component (A14)

Although there were several pictures of the RAM component with the A14 chip that had been leaked in July, there wasn’t much that could be gleaned out of it. The only information available- it was manufactured this year- possibly in April.

Logic Board

Nothing could be identified from the logic board that was leaked in May. It wasn’t even identifiable if the logic board was of iPhone 12 or 12 Pro.

Display of the iPhone 12

Despite the differences in the price of the higher end and the lower end models, Apple will probably do away with the LCD display from its phones. Every model of the latest iPhone will use OLED technology and have an OLED display. This very usage of OLED will actually make the iPhones ever more flexible. BOE Display, a Chinese company is providing the OLED displays that Apple is testing for its iPhones. But to date, Samsung has been supplying the OLED screens that Apple uses for iPhones. Incidentally, the Chinese company failed in delivering the shipment of the OLED screen panels for iPhone 12, which is why Apple will be using other supplies- LG display being one of them.

Most of the new iPhones that will be coming out this year will have Y-OCTA technology. This has been adopted from Samsung, which would allow the touchscreen circuitry to get patterned directly to the OLED panel. This completely negates the need for another layer, thereby slimming the display, and well as the costs of production.

Display Details

  1. 5.4 inch- Will contain an OLED Display, along with Y-OCTA technology. 475 PPI with a resolution of 2340 x 1080.
  2. 6.1 inch – LG Display will provide the OLED Display. 460 PPI with a resolution of 2532 x 1170.
  3. 6.1 inch – Samsung will provide the OLED display, which might come with XDR. ProMotion could be possible- but is not guaranteed due to LTPO lack, and power requirements. 460 PPI with a resolution of 2532 x 1170.
  4. 6.7 inch- Samsung will yet again provide the OLED display with Y-OCTA support and XDR. ProMotion could be possible but is not completely guaranteed. Also, will have 458 PPI based on a resolution of 2778 x 1284.

ProMotion Technology

There have been rumors which suggest that the company is about to consider a ProMotion display of about 120 Hz for its higher-end iPhones. This means that the Apple iPhone 12 will work similarly to the iPad Pro. This feature greatly accentuates the movement of the screen- bringing with it fluid scrolling, smoother motion, and greater responsiveness.

iPhone 12 display

Also, this feature helps in optimizing the refresh rate of the device. This helps maintain battery life. Imagine if you are watching a movie, and then surfing the web. Chances are, you wouldn’t need the same refresh rate for the web that you needed for the movie. The ProMotion display will detect the movement on the screen and thereby manage the refresh rate based on the needs.

iPhone 12 camera

But, on a greater level, ProMotion display does affect the battery interval, and considering it isn’t guaranteed if LTPO technology will be used for the iPhones- ProMotion might not be either. There have been subsequent rumors that while the company is deliberating on whether to add ProMotion display to iPhone 12, the biggest challenge is simply to see if the battery life would be harmed or not. A rumor in August mentioned how Apple might either delay the launch of the product to accommodate this feature or simply scrap it out.

A 14 Chip

There have been several rumors circulating that TSMC will be the manufacturers of the 5-nanometer chips that Apple will be using in its iPhone 12. The utility of A14 would ensure an increase of 15% in performance, as well as a reduction of 30% in power consumption. Bloomberg mentions that the A14 chip would actually be useful in accelerating AR tasks, and artificial intelligence.

RAM

There has been circulating rumors that the iPhone 12 Pro model will have a RAM of 6 GB, while the lower end iPhone 12 will have a RAM of 4 GB. The higher-end models will have a 6 GB RAM.

Battery

Apple is working on coming out with small gains when it comes to battery capacity so that they could develop a battery that would be half as small and thin when compared to other iPhones. For this will definitely open up a lot of space for iPhones. It has also been mentioned that due to the price incurred by 5G connectivity technology, Apple might be looking to reduce the production costs from the other ends. And this would result in a battery that is much simpler in design.

Power Adapter

iPhone 12 charger

The upcoming iPhone models of the iPhone 12 Pro series probably won’t come with any power adapter. This is probably because Apple is looking to cut down on the prices after the involvement of 5G into the mix. To compensate for that, an extra 20 W USB-C charger will be available for purchase.

Lightning to USB-C Cable

iPhone 12 charger

Although Apple could very well be removing the power adapter from the box of an average Apple iPhone 12, it may bring out a new USB-C to Lightning Cable. And this transformation will probably be available in a much durable design which is also braided.

Rear Cameras

iPhone 12 camera

Coming to the section on cameras, Apple is supposed to make big changes in the upcoming iPhone series in 2020. The rear camera console has already gone through a major change in the 2019 Apple iPhone series when the iPhone 11 series came with a brand –new triple-lens console. Both the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 pro Max came with the same console. Now that the new iPhone 12 series is on the line, Apple is rumored to make more changes to its attractive rear camera design.

Some of the rumors suggest that the new iPhone 12 lineup will include a 3D Camera. This is almost similar to the newly-added LiDAR Scanner feature that is there in the Apple iPad Pro models of 2020.

The LiDAR sensor that comes within the camera console along with the dual-lens in the 2020 iPad series can map its surrounding environment and any objects that are present in the range of 5 meters or 16.4 feet. This impressive feature uses the reflection of light to gauge the distance between the surrounding items and the LiDAR sensor within nano-seconds.

To capture the reality of the surroundings on the screen, Apple iPad models use a combination of depth sensors like the LiDAR sensor, camera data, and motion sensors to improve the quality of the screen image considerably. The 3D camera which is likely to be available in the new iPhone models of 2020 is also supposed to work on a similar technique, if not better.

Apple is supposed to use the VCSEL lasers from a company called Lumentum from San Jose. This is likely to be used in the 3D depth sensor which is definitely going to be present in at least one, if not all, of Apple’s new high-end iPhone lineup.

Up till now, there’s talk of two high-end iPhones launching in 2020. The 3D depth sensor will possibly not be available for the cheaper models coming in 2020. The 3D camera might also be limited to the 6.7 iPhone model.

The 12 and 12 Pro models are likely to include other camera features improved optical zoom (2x), a new 3x optical zoom on top of that, and a smarter HDR for improved low-light photography. Apart from that, rumors suggest that Apple is likely to include a sensor-shift photo stabilization tech in the higher-end models. This amazing technology will allow us to use image stabilization in the camera sensor rather than on individual lenses.

The high-end iPhone series is likely to get these changes along with a triple-lens camera. However, the lower range models will temporarily stick to the dual-lens genre.

LG is supposed to manufacture the camera modules for higher-end 2020 iPhones, whereas O-film and Sharp are likely to create the camera console for the budget iPhones.

It’s time to get excited as with iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 max or a pro you will be able to shoot 4kvideos at a frame-speed of 12- to 240 a second.

TrueDepth Camera System

Among Apple analysts, Bloomberg and Ming-Chi Kuo believe that the new iPhone models are likely to feature a thinner bezel with a smaller lens for the front camera. So, you can expect a smaller notch on the screen due to the small front camera feature. However, there continue to be mixed rumors on this point.

As an additional point, Barclays, an Apple analyst, mentions that the new iPhone 12 will come with an improved TrueView camera system. Though Barclays have not produced any detailed report on this, we can expect to see such a refreshing change in the new Apple iPhone 12 series.

Some rumors suggest that the front camera notch might not be present all together in the new Apple iPhone 12 models but this technology might be too far-fetched. Bloomberg has reported on this saying that future models might get rid of the notch altogether but it’s expected to be present in the 2020 iPhone models.

According to a Credit Suisse analyst, Apple is likely to introduce an iPhone without its usual Face ID security option in 2020. At least one model is also supposed to come with an under-display fingerprint sensor.

iPhone 12

The “refreshed” version of the TrueDepth front camera is likely to contain an RGB light and IR proximity sensor to be embedded in an OLED display.

Face Id is also to be remodeled to support a wider angle range for the purpose of unlocking. The introduction of new sensor techs indicates that Apple is going for a no notch or smaller Face ID notch in its models after 2020.

Storage Space

The base model for the new iPhone 12 and 12 Pro lineup is likely to have a 128 GB storage space. This is an interesting thing to look forward to in the new iPhone lineup as the 128 GB model is only the starting point of the storage capacity. This information has been gathered from YouTuber Jon Prosser who specializes in Apple’s tech information and rumors.

Another source has suggested that only the higher-end models might have the base storage capacity of 128 GB. The new iPhones set to release in 2020 will also include cheaper models that are likely to begin in the 64 GB quota so that the price remains in the budget section. Both the cheaper iPhone 12 models will have 64 GB. However, the specs for the higher-end iPhone models include base storage of 128 GB.

Touch ID

If we’re to go deeper into the specs of the new Apple iPhone 12, a Taiwanese site called the Economic Daily News claims that one, if not more, of the new Apple iPhone 12 models is likely to include an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor by Qualcomm manufacturers.

This particular source also deliberates on the fact that Apple’s new iPhone 12 will contain an under-display fingerprint sensor. This might not be available in all the models. Bur Economic Daily Times states that the iPhone 5G high-end models of 2020 have a chance of including this feature.

We’ve come across the rumors of Apple releasing iPhones with ultrasonic fingerprint sensors earlier as well but it’s mostly for its 2021 launches. For these future launches, Apple might be using Qualcomm’s in-display (30*20mm) fingerprint sensor designed for smartphones in 2019. However, we’re not sure that this particular feature will see the light of day just yet.

This is also supported by Kuo’s statement and also information released by Bloomberg which suggests that Apple is preparing for a model which will include both an in-display (or under the screen) sensor and a Face ID but its launch is not to be expected before 2021.

5G Connectivity

Ming-Chi Kuo, an Apple analyst mentions that all Apple iPhones expected in 2020 will be running on 5G connectivity. And all the four iPhones namely iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, Pro Max are supposed to feature the Qualcomm X55 5G modem chip.

This is another refreshing change as Apple’s 2020 lineup will not be using Intel chips but Qualcomm chips. The transition from Qualcomm to Intel had happened because both the tech-giants were involved in a harsh legal battle which only got resolved in 2019.

The X55 5G Qualcomm chip is the first of its kind. It offers the maximum download speed of 7 GB per second and the upload speed of 3 GB per second. These numbers might sound amazing but these are the ideal figures. The actual speed will depend on your carrier network. However, the exciting thing is this new 5G chip supports all kinds of operation modes, network deployments, and frequency bands.

5G is still new in the market so you should know that there are 2 types of 5G networks, namely the mmWave 5G and the sub-6GHz 5G network. There are a few distinct differences between both of them. While mmWave is faster, its range is limited to urban locales with a busy population as the mmWave has a shorter range. The other one is best for rural or semi-urban locales as it has a slower but wider range.

5G iPhone users don’t have to worry regarding the connectivity. It may be a new feature but by the time the new Apple iPhone 12 and its lineup releases, the groundwork will be complete in the US for such a release.

However, we’re still unsure of Apple’s implementation process. Rumors suggest that Apple has declined to use RF front-end features by Qualcomm which can reduce the potential speed. However, there’s no official source to back this claim.

As opposed to all the above-mentioned sources, DigiTimes, a Taiwanese site has claimed that Apple might go for Snapdragon X60. This is because this version leaves a smaller footprint and has a greater power-efficiency than Qualcomm X55. But it’s not clear if this claim is likely as Qualcomm reported that the X60 will not launch before 2021.

Antenna

Apple might use the Qualcomm X55 5G chip; however, it has refused to apply the antenna that accompanies the modem chip. Apple is reportedly planning the design of the antenna themselves as the Qualcomm antenna doesn’t go with the sleek look of the new Apple iPhone 12.

WiFi

Apple iPhone 12 and its 2020 lineup might go for an improved WiFi standard. Rumors suggest that it’ll be using the IEEE 802.11ay instead of the 801.11ad standard. This will quadruple the strength and range of the bandwidth. It’s also likely to use a 60 GHz spectrum WiFi. The specs will be finalized by the end of this year.

No EarPods

The new Apple iPhone 12 series might not contain the usual wired EarPods which come with the box. This might be an Apple marketing strategy to promote its new AirPods. Ming-Chi Kuo mentions that Apple might not include the EarPods so as to cut the cost of the new iPhone 12. It’s also suggested that Apple might go for a discount or any kind of promotional strategy to increase demand for its new AirPods.

Apple One Services Bundle

apple bundle

Apple iOS 14 and iPhone 12 series is likely to include a new bundle option called the “Apple One.” This will include paid subscriptions of Apple services like Apple Music, Apple News, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and so on. There’ll be a range of options starting from a basic package to more expensive packages which might also include an iCloud storage space or a fitness service, etc.

For the various iPhone 12 models, Apple is likely to vary their price. The best news is that an iPhone 12 might cost as low as $649 in 2020. That is really something to look forward to for an OLED iPhone. The range of the price estimate is as follows.

  •     iPhone 12 (5.4 inch) – $649
  •     iPhone 12 (6.1 inch) – $749
  •     iPhone 12 Pro (6.1 inch) – $999
  •     iPhone 12 Pro Max (6.7 inch) – $1099

There are still varying estimates regarding prices from different sources.

iPhone Release Date

The pandemic has delayed Apple’s release considerably. During the July earnings call, Apple announced that the 2020 models will be released later than usual. Luca Maestri, Apple’s CFO mentioned that the release will happen ‘a few weeks later’ than when it happened in 2019. This statement allows us to expect the 2020 iPhone series in mid-late October. The time matches with multiple rumors from several sources. Apple will be releasing its 6.1 inches iPhone 12 model first which will be followed by the 6.7 inches high-end iPhone 12 Pro Max model and then the 5.4-inch models.

YouTube Jon Prosser suggests that the release of the new models will happen on October 12 at an Apple event. The new lineup will be available for preorder shortly after that. But his theory also suggests that the iPhone 12 Pro high-end models will not be available before November.

What To Expect In The Future

In the latter half of 2021 Apple is rumored to release a high-end iPhone which might go for a “completely wireless experience.” Apple might get rid of the wired charging of its models. You can also expect Apple without a Lightning Port in Apple’s future models.

Kuo suggests that Apple might launch an iPhone SE 2 Plus by the end of next year. This model is rumored to include a bezel-free display, no Face Id, under-screen fingerprint sensor features and so on.

Apple might also go for Snapdragon X60 after its launch in 2021. The iPhone 13 is another model we can look forward to in the upcoming year. However, the information regarding that might be inaccurate at this stage.

Besides these rumors, there’s also another possibility that Apple might develop a partnership with LG to develop a foldable display. The project is rumored to begin in 2020; however, it’ll take three years for this technology to launch.

That’s all you need to know about the new iPhone 12 coming up within the next few months.
