JoJo Siwa has spoken publicly about coming out as LGBT and the influence of celebrities like Demi Lovato and Jenna Dewan on her life.
Siwa, now 19 years old, rapped about her coming out in a video titled “My Gay Awakening Story” on the video-sharing platform TikTok.
As an example of her personality, Siwa recalled that when she was 12 years old, Demi Lovato‘s “Cool for the Summer” track from her 2015 Confident album was popular.

When I was younger, I did not understand what it meant, but now that I am older, I do.” Then she reflected on “Jenna Dewan eventually appeared on Lip Sync Battle, but not for a few more years. She performed a fantastic performance in Magic Mike, and I must have seen it every day. Little me, well, she did not realize she was homosexual.”
Many years later, on the first date with a man who “wanted to have sex with me,” she had an “awakening.”

JoJo Siwa did not complicate the caption by adding anything beyond, “Enjoy.” In a series of postings across TikTok and Instagram in January 2021, Siwa revealed her sexual orientation to the world. Fans speculated that she could have been coming out as gay when she lip-synced Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” after spending the day with the TikTok collective Pride House LA. She even wore a t-shirt proclaiming her as the “BEST GAY COUSIN EVER” to prove it.
In an interview with PEOPLE published the following April, JoJo Siwa explained her declaration by saying it was the final secret she was keeping from the public. And was motivated by her budding romance with Kylie Prew, a friend she had known since late 2020. (Siwa is now involved with TikTok star Avery Cyrus.)
