Tax Season Stimulus Check
Stimulus Check

Many states have finished paying out Stimulus Checks, but New Jersey has yet to begin doing so and won’t do so until March. If you live in a state and believe you are qualified for a stimulus check but have not yet received one, please contact your state’s revenue agency immediately.

Relief levels, income thresholds, and refund release dates vary by state. Here is a rundown of the numerous stimulus check programs operated by the states, along with contact information in case you haven’t received your payment.

California

According to the California Franchise Tax Board, by the end of 2022, 95 percent of all Middle-Class Tax Refund (MCTR) payments were to have been distributed (FTB). The remaining shares were scheduled for distribution on January 15, 2023. Based on their annual income, tax filing status, and the number of people living in their homes, an estimated 23 million Californians are qualified to receive a Stimulus Check for up to $1,050.

Colorado

Stimulus Checks totaling $750 for single filers and $1,500 for joint filers were issued to Colorado residents who met the following requirements: (1) lived in Colorado for the entire year of 2021; (2) filed a state tax return for the 2021 income tax year; and (3) were 18 years of age or older on December 31, 2021. By the end of September, recipients should have received them.

Delaware

Residents who filed a tax return for either 2020 or 2021, or who were 18 or older as of December 31, 2021, received payments of $300 for individuals and $600 for joint filers in May 2022.

Florida

Florida’s one-time inflation payment, launched in July, offered to assist over 60,000 adoptive and foster families with a one-time $450 stimulus check as part of a wider “Hope Florida — A Pathway to Prosperity” project spearheaded by First Lady Casey DeSantis.

Georgia

It was expected that those who owed taxes for the 2020 tax year and who filed state returns for both that year and the next year would get a check or have the monies deposited into their accounts in August of 2022. According to CNET, in March 2022, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp approved a measure that will provide rebate checks of $250 (single filers), $375 (heads of households), and $500 (married joint filers) to taxpayers who filed forms for both years 2020 and 2021.

Hawaii

Residents of Hawaii may get either a $300 or $100 payment from the state according to Act 115, depending on their filing status and their federal adjusted gross income. All citizens who submitted their 2021 tax returns by December 31st, 2022 were eligible for this. Beginning in the middle of October 2022, paper checks were sent to employees in addition to the direct payments that had begun in August. After submitting your 2021 tax return, you should get your one-time “constitutional refund” within 10-12 weeks.

Idaho

Republican Governor Brad Little signed a state tax refund measure in February that gave each Idaho resident either $75 or 12% of their income tax return for 2020. If you have not received your Stimulus Check by April 2022, please contact the Idaho State Tax Commission.

Illinois

On September 12, 2022, under Governor J.B. Pritzker’s state Family Relief Plan, one-time refunds for individual income and property taxes were issued. A family of four was eligible for a $300 rebate on their Illinois state income taxes. To the tune of $300, homeowners may get a refund on top of the property tax credit they already received in 2021 by filing Form IL-1040.

Indiana

Gov. Eric Holcomb has guaranteed a one-time reimbursement of $125 for single and $250 for joint filers for the 2020 tax year. Most people got their hands on this Stimulus Check in the summer of 2022, either via direct deposit or a postal check; but, mail delays caused some people to miss out. Another round of refunds totaling $200 for single taxpayers and $400 for joint filers was enacted by the Indiana legislature in August 2022. Checks of $325 for singles or $650 for couples filing jointly might be sent out to residents.

Maine

The first $850 relief checks were sent out in June 2022, and all payments for qualified Mainers (full-year residents who file a 2021 tax return by October 31, 2022) were due by the end of 2022. An $850 rebate was supposed to go to residents who register as single and make less than $100,000, or to those who file as heads of families and make less than $150,000 a year. Earning a combined $200,000 as a married couple qualified them for a $1,700 reward.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts’ planned rebate checks were worth perhaps 13% of each resident’s 2021 income tax due, although that figure was not known when they were originally announced. It was determined that refunds amounted to around 14% of a person’s total state income tax obligation. If you were a resident of the United States in November, you were entitled to a payment that was supposed to be given to you automatically (either through direct deposit or by letter).

Minnesota

Nearly 1.2 million employees who showed up to work in person at the peak of the COVID-19 epidemic applied for a one-time payment of $750 in 2022, and on October 5, 2022, those payments were dispersed, as reported by the Duluth Tribune.

New Jersey

The Affordable New Jersey Communities for Homeowners and Renters (ANCHOR) program, part of the state’s $50.6 billion budget, would pay property tax refund Stimulus Checks to almost 2 million homeowners based on their income. The Homestead Rebate it replaces was eliminated in 2013. This is the last remaining state rebate that has not been paid out. Submit your application before February 28th, 2023! Patch quotes Jennifer Sciortino, a spokeswoman for the state treasury, as saying, “At this moment in time, we can only affirm that they will go out no later than May 2023.”

New Mexico

In July, the state of New Mexico began sending out its first installment of an automatic Stimulus Check of $250 for single taxpayers and $500 for joint filers and heads of households. The second installment was sent in August, and it was $500 for single taxpayers and $1,000 for joint filers (and heads of household). When in doubt, New Mexicans may use the toll-free number (800) 283-4465.

New York

To get a Stimulus Check on your New York State property taxes of up to $1,050, you must be a resident of New York and meet the requirements of the School Tax Relief (STAR) program for the year 2022. In August of 2022, a new once-off refund on property taxes of $150 was implemented.

Pennsylvania

Low-income homeowners in Pennsylvania who participate in the state’s Property Tax Rent/Reimbursement program were eligible for a one-time tax rebate, as reported by GOBankingRates. Homeowners must have been either 65 or older, a widow or widower 50 or older, or a person with a disability who is at least 18 years old.
