In a recent announcement, the Congresswoman from Minnesota, Ilhan Omar, has been raising awareness for her proposal which would result in the distribution of stimulus check payments worth $1,200 to adults, along with an additional sum of $600 to children.

The SUPPORT Act, as it has been called, would mandate that these payments last for five years- if they do end up passing. In a recent op-ed which was published in the Star Tribute, one of the outlets in the home state of the Congresswoman, Omar went on to express her support for the actions that had been taken by Governor Tim Walz in reducing child poverty- and also spoke as to what they should be doing at the federal level.

Stimulus Check Proposal Under The Support Act

One of the proposals that the Governor made does center around providing a child tax credit to the families in the state- which would be modeled after the enhanced credit which was passed under the American Rescue Plan. Under this, the child tax credit saw an increase in value from $2,000 to $3,000 for each child between the age of six and seventeen and $3,600 for each under the age of six years. Also, rather than claiming the credit on the tax return, the IRS also issued monthly stimulus check payments from July to December 2021- while allowing the remaining value to be claimed when they were filing for it in 2022.

Under the SUPPORT Act, the law not only mandates that the stimulus check payments are sent, but it would also allow for making multiple changes to the public services that have been offered by the Federal Reserve. The proposal by the Representative does mandate that the member banks of the Federal Reserve would be providing bank accounts to residents for holding digital dollar balances.
