The derby fight between the two Madrid teams has boiled over into social media. Twitter saw a post by Atletico Madrid criticizing Real Madrid over their statements on the official decisions taken in the match.

Atletico Madrid tweeted that their local rivals are arguing over correct refereeing as well, they are so used to everything going their way.

Atletico Madrid’s Controversial Derby Decision

The referee in Sunday’s derby was Alejandro Hernandez. The match had ended in a draw with one goal apiece. However, Real Madrid had claimed a handball in Atletico Madrid’s penalty box. Hernandez had denied the claims. If Real had won the derby, Atletico’s gap to them would have been considerably cut down. Atletico Madrid is currently leading La Liga.

Atletico Madrid was leading in the first half, through Luis Suarez. Searching for an equalizer, when Toni Kroos’ corner allegedly took a deviation after hitting the arm of Felipe. Hernandez opted to look at the VAR but then ruled that it was not intentional enough for a penalty. Real Madrid however, still managed to draw level through a Karim Benzema effort two minutes from the end of the game.

Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro explains that had it not taken such a touch, the ball would have fallen for him with a clear shot at goal. He further states that this should have been enough reason for a penalty. However, he praises the referee for at least going to the VAR. Karim Benzema shared his teammate’s opinion. Zinedine Zidane, the Real Madrid head, stayed away from complaining about the decision.

However, there was a more energetic statement from Emiliano Butrageno, director of institutional relations at Madrid. He exclaimed about the fact that this is the second time his club has been hurt by Hernandez’s refereeing.

The gap between the two teams remains at five points, with Atletico Madrid having played one less match.
