He was able to get $1 million by manipulating the system. And like many of us, Dan Saunders, an Australian who was fortunate, didn’t think twice about using the extra money on travel, shopping, and evenings out. Saunders, whose amazing story is already being adapted into a movie, lavished money on upscale dining establishments and private planes after finding a hack that allowed him to access virtually endless funds. When Saunders attempted to check his bank balance in 2011 after a night out, he discovered an ATM glitch causing the machine to perform oddly that wouldn’t display his balance.

“I transferred $200 (£117) from my credit account to my savings, and it said ‘transaction canceled’ and spat the card out,” Saunders subsequently revealed to Vice. I decided to try taking $200 out of my savings account to see what would happen since I felt it was rather strange.” Following his receipt of the $200, Saunders was intrigued by the peculiar malfunction in the machine and decided to check on its functionality later on.

“I put the card in again and started playing around because I’d been thinking about how strange the whole thing was,” he said. I removed the money by making another $200 (£117) transfer. Next, $500 (£293), and last, $600 (£351), only to observe the outcome.” As Saunders deduced that the ATM glitch caused a disconnection between the bank and the internet between one and three in the morning, he stumbled into a very uncommon issue. He used the attack swiftly, withdrawing hundreds and eventually thousands of dollars. “I spent $2,000 (£1,170) on the first day, but I transferred $4,000 (£2,341) on the second day to make sure my balance didn’t stay negative,” he stated.
