Gilbert Gottfried passed away on 12th April last year when he was only around the age of 67 due to type two myotonic dystrophy. His death was a grief that not only Hollywood felt in its entirety but also fans ranging across all generations. Though Gilbert Gottfried could be more mainstream because of his abilities because of several voice-over shows, like Lago the parrot in Aladdin, Gottfried was distinguished from his peers by his distinctive voice, creative comedic timing, and loud-mouthed, vulgar standup jokes. 

Of Grief, Love, And Loss: A Letter To Gilbert Gottfried 

On the verge of his first death anniversary, Gilbert Gottfried’s widow Dara Gottfried writes a heartfelt remembrance of her husband. She begins with what an amazing father he has been to their children Max and Lily, who are now 13 and 15, as well as her memories of the man she loves and misses.

She opened the letter, which directly addresses Gilbert Gottfried by saying that last year, on the day he passed away, their wedding vows of to the end of time, came to a full circle as it was the death that parted them. She then says that although  “Too Soon” feels appropriate in many ways since Gilbert was renowned for his comedy from “Too Soon.” Yet, now it was not so funny since he had been snatched too soon from her. 

The letter continues, as she reflects upon the beautiful moments she has had with him and expresses her gratitude to Gilbert Gottfried’s fans, her amazing friends and family as well as their incredible podcast community for their immense love and support. She then spoke about how they met at the Grammy’s when she was 27 and he was 42, and over a brief accidental conversation, they got along. The long heartfelt letter gives an incredible insight into the life of Gilbert Gottfried, his marriage, struggles, parenthood, and his battle with this rare genetic disorder that ultimately took his life.
